As of January 2014, The Harper government in Canada has quietly opened the door to a major expansion of British Columbia’s controversial fish farm sector despite warnings about the effects of net-based farms on wild salmon.

A 2008 study comparing survival of wild salmon in areas with salmon farms to similar areas without salmon farms, examining these paired comparisons in multiple locations in Canada and Europe, the authors found that in many cases, the presence of salmon farms reduced wild salmon survival by more than 50 percent per generation.

Large concentrations of fish can increase the presence of diseases and parasites that can be transmitted to nearby wild populations. Such transmission has been documented in all areas where salmon farms and wild salmon co-exist. Wild salmon in British Columbia are negatively impacted by sea lice coming from fish farms.

In June 2013, a Norwegian pediatrician risked her career to warn women that the PCBs and Dioxins in farmed salmon are so high they are a risk to the development of their babies’ brains. Norway hid info on the toxicity of farmed salmon from the public for years. The Norweigian salmon farming industry lobbied the European Union to allow an increase in toxin levels in their feed because it makes salmon farming more profitable. These same Norwegian farming and feed manufacters operate in British Columbia, with their product going to California.

Biologist Alexandra Morton alleges that in March 2013, Atlantic salmon infected with Piscine Reovirus (PRV) were transferred into an open-pen fish farm operated by Marine Harvest in Shelter Bay, BC, along the Fraser River sockeye migration route.

What is PRV? PRV attacks the muscles, specifically the heart, of salmon. Considered to be the causative agent of Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflammation (HSMI), it was first observed on Norwegian salmon farms in 1999 and spread quickly. It is now thought to have spread to virtually all fish farms in Norway, affecting close to 100% of farmed fish sampled.

Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflammation (HSMI) is a severe disease that affects the muscles and heart of salmon. HSMI can weaken salmon to the point they are unable to swim up a river and reproduce. PRV has recently been identified in farmed Atlantic salmon in BC. Scientists report that PRV is associated with and thought to cause HSMI. They also warn that PRV must be contained to prevent widespread infection of wild fish populations.

Did you know the Whole Foods farmed salmon toxin standards are 7 times higher than considered safe by the WHO? According their Jan. 1, 2013 Quality Standards, Whole Foods only requires farmed salmon producers to show they are making ‘progress toward meeting maximum allowable contaminate levels’ for PCBs, dioxins, furans, dioxin-like PCBs and mercury.

This means their customers don’t actually know the levels of dangerous toxins present in Norwegian farmed salmon.

Make no mistake: salmon ‘farms’ are large-scale fish factories that operate as intensive livestock grow-outs in the ocean with up to a million fish raised on a single site. Factory salmon are fed colourants to turn their grey flesh pink and given antibiotics and de-lousing drugs to fight disease and parasites.

There are no barriers for disease, viruses, bacteria and lice between salmon feedlots and the surrounding waters.

Salmon feedlots never shovel their manure, it all pours into rich coastal fishing grounds. During salmon feedlot mass mortalities, over 325 billion infectious viral particles can spread into the ocean per hour. Though salmon feedlots in Canada frequently experience mass mortalities from viruses, not enough is done to protect wild fish. Massive lobster kills have occurred with salmon feedlot sea lice drugs found in them on Canada’s east coast.

At The DFO (Canadian Govt. ‘Department of Fisheries and Oceans’) in Vancouver BC: to protest Fisheries Minister Gail Shea’s anouncement that, despite the Cohen Commission’s recommendations not to open any new fish farms until their association with the Fraser Sockeye Collapse was determined, Minister Shea was giving the Norwegian fish farm industry the go ahead to open eleven more fish farms despite the overpowering indications that sea lice and disease from their fish farms is killing our wild salmon stocks, Sockeye included.
