CAC’s mission and early history:
CAC was founded in 1971 by Sam Millar, A. W. Turnbow, and me, Vikki T. We sat around the kitchen table and spit-balled ideas until we settled on the name Cosmic Awareness Communications. I ended up doing the legal work when the lawyer we hired failed miserably. It was sort of fun being mistaken for a law student during the hours of research I did at the State Law Library. Being here in Olympia, the state capital was lucky so access was so handy.
The longer view of the Awareness work began around 1961 and developed through two earlier groups, both of which A. W. was involved in, (but not me or Sam). It’s a long and colorful history and details are in historic issue 500 and issue 802 ($3 and $4 respectively)--with pictures, too.
CAC’s Articles of Incorporation were simple and broad:
“A. To acquire and disseminate information of a religious, esoteric, mystical and scientific nature by printing, publishing and instructing through the use of school, radio, television, motion pictures and various other communication, and to manufacture and distribute games, inventions and other items designed for use as teaching aids.
B. To do any other activity of a charitable, religious, educational, scientific, humanitarian, or benevolent nature which in the judgment of the directors of this corporation shall be beneficial and shall not be contrary to the laws of the State of Washington or the United States of America.”
When I submitted our paperwork, both the State of Washington and the IRS immediately accepted it.
Aside from the legal premise, the mission of CAC is to ‘lessen the sorrow and suffering in the world by reminding people of who, in fact, they really are—aspects of the Divine.’ One of my favorite early quotes is (paraphrasing here) every human face is every other human face. We put out a pamphlet for general introductions in 1983 “Cosmic Awareness Speaks” and still have some copies left (only in hard copy form) for $8. Originally priced at $3, I just noted the dues rates on page 1 have never gone up(!) So our pledge to be non-profit has been our operational stance, but postage for this 94 page booklet has gone up, along with everything else in the last four-plus decades.
This happy group pix was captured in 2009. Both husbands, Bruce Giles and Avaton Turnbow, have since passed, but next to Vikki T, you'll see our faithful staff member, you know as V Sharp (so as to keep the number of Vikki's down; she was Vicky Giles in 2009). Check out their current staff photos for 2026.
